Where personal attention leads to positive results

This chapter has come to a close

There comes a time in every story when one chapter closes and a new one begins.

Rose Alcantara has begun a new chapter with her recent move to Mexico.

Island Pilates by Rose has closed its doors in Belize with mixed feelings of sadness and loss, but comfort in the knowledge that she has made friends for life. There was not a single client who walked through her door who was not also a dearly treasured friend.

Thank you to all who supported Island Pilates by Rose and who invested in their own health and well-being.

Rose urges all her island friends to keep on the path to good health by whatever means they find joyful and fulfilling. Your good health will reward you a hundred times over. Keep that positive light shining. Keep those embers of friendship glowing.

Good health, good friends, good love and good life to all.

— Rose Alcantara

Miami Dolphins cornerback relies on Pilates to keep knees, quads strong

Xavien Howard, Sammy Watkins

The legs of cornerback Xavien Howard of Miami Dolphins take a pounding. To stay healthy for the playoffs, Howard is working out on a Pilates reformer for two hours a day.

You wouldn’t expect a pro football player preparing for the playoffs to spend a significant portion of his workout in bare feet on workout pads or using a gadget called a “reformer,” according to the Palm Beach Post.

Such is the state of the Dolphins’ banged-up secondary that second-round draft pick Xavien Howard continues to rebound from knee surgery by getting massages and doing Pilates, in addition to football practice. To say he does the extra work daily doesn’t do it justice.

“Two hours a day,” he said.

Howard agreed two hours of such work is not standard operating procedure in the NFL, especially at Week 1 of the playoffs.

“That’s unusual,” he said. “By me being a rookie, I went through a lot of injuries, so I’ve got to protect my body.”

Miami has lost a number of defensive players to injuries but Howard keeps on. Do you think the connection might be Pilates?

For Rose, Sundays are all about chilled eucalyptus-scented towels

Miss Rose is enveloped in the cooling scent of eucalyptus as she prepares chilled towels for her Pilates classes for the week.

At the end of every Pilates session, private or group, Rose loves to hand out chilled towels scented with eucalyptus oil.  Nothing revives you after a hard workout like resting on your back with a scented towel over your face, breathing in the cool invigorating eucalyptus scent.

This is a picture of Rose this afternoon, dipping her freshly washed towels in the eucalyptus water, then rolling them up before packaging in sealed plastic bags.

She is starting the week off with 40 scented towels and will likely rewash, scent and chill them again by Thursday.

Rose brings towels for her two floor Pilates classes at Zen Belize, on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. Some Pilates students are so refreshed they stay for the 11 a.m. yoga class with Tara!

On the first Friday of every month Rose has extra towels ready for the all-volunteer Tres Cocos Roadside & Beach cleanup crew which ends the day at Daydreamin’ Belize Bed & Breakfast and Marbucks Coffee House. In both cases, Rose never knows how many people to expect so she always prepares extras, just to be on the safe side!

If you have never experienced the feel of a chilled eucalyptus-scented towel on your face as you rest on the mat at the end of a vigorous workout, you are missing a real treat.

Come try a Pilates floor session at Zen Belize and feel the coolness at the end of class!

Meditation is part of the power trio — with Pilates and yoga — that can help you find health, fitness and inner peace. Here are 16 specific guided meditations from the Chopra Center.

Just like Pilates, meditation can remove stress and replace it with a dose of inner peace. In fact, yoga, Pilates and meditation are three of the most valuable and complimentary practices you can embrace to promote health, fitness and inner peace.

Meditation balances our emotions, deals with physical and psychological distress, and promotes the peace of the present moment.

But it can be tough to meditate without a teacher or guide.

Enter guided meditations. Meditating on your own requires some effort, while guided meditations literally walk you through a meditation and help you find a calm and peaceful state—one step at a time.

Try one of these 16 guided meditations, provided by the Chopra Center. Each one focuses on a unique theme, including empowerment, third Chakra, global peace, unleashing creativity and letting go of the need to control.

Meditations here range from five minutes to one hour.

What’s the difference between yoga and Pilates?

The great news is that you don't have to choose between Pilates and yoga! They compliment each other.

The great news is that you don’t have to choose between Pilates and yoga! They compliment each other.

Nearly 20.4 million people were practicing Yoga in the U.S. in 2012, according to The Huffington Post, and those numbers are likely even higher now as yoga is at an all-time height of popularity.

Pilates, too, is rising in popularity, says the Chopra Center. Yoga may have a bigger following right now but with celebrity Pilates teachers like Tracy Anderson and participants such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna, and Jennifer Aniston, yoga may have some competition.

The good news is that you don’t have to choose between the two. A lot of people practice both yoga and Pilates to get just the right balance of benefits.
